Shafts, axles and spindles
A shaft is rarely just a turned cylinder. Bearing seats with fits, keyways, flats, cross holes and threads are part of it — and everything has to be accurate relative to everything else. On our Mazak Integrex machines we make such shafts complete in one setup: turning, milling and drilling, without errors adding up from re-clamping.
We turn bearing seats down to IT7, for example h6 or k6. Where a shaft is hardened, we plan the grinding allowance from the outset.

Design tips
- Fits only on functional surfaces: h6 at the bearing seat; ISO 2768-m is sufficient elsewhere. Every fit costs inspection time.
- Undercuts at shoulders: an undercut to DIN 509 at bearing shoulders makes manufacturing easier and improves fatigue strength.
- Replacement from a sample: if you no longer have a drawing, we measure the old shaft and make a new one from it.
- Slender shafts: from a length-to-diameter ratio of about 4 : 1 we work with a tailstock — please allow centre holes where possible.
