Aluminium milled parts to drawing
Housings, plates, brackets and fixtures in aluminium — 5-axis milling up to 1,060 mm, series on the horizontal centre with pallet changer.
Milled parts in aluminium
Aluminium is light and easy to machine, which makes it the material of choice for housings, base plates, brackets, fixtures and prototypes. Because high cutting speeds are possible, a good milling strategy matters a great deal — as does making sure thin walls and pockets do not vibrate or distort during machining.
On our 5-axis centres we machine several sides in one setup. Series parts run on the horizontal centre with two pallets: while one pallet is being machined, we set up the next.
Typical parts
- Housings and covers
- Base and mounting plates
- Brackets and adapters
- Fixtures and gauges
- Heat sinks
- Prototypes and one-off parts
Typical materials
| EN AW-5754 (AlMg3) | easy to weld and seawater-resistant — for sheets and plates |
|---|---|
| EN AW-5083 (AlMg4.5Mn) | stronger than 5754, low distortion as cast plate — for base and fixture plates |
| EN AW-6082 (AlSi1MgMn) | the versatile standard alloy for milled parts |
| EN AW-7075 (AlZn5.5MgCu) | high-strength — for highly stressed parts |
| EN AW-2007 (AlCu4PbMgMn) | free-cutting alloy — particularly easy to machine |

Design tips
- Don't make inner radii too small: a pocket with a 3 mm radius can be cut with a sturdy end mill; a 0.5 mm radius needs a fine tool and a lot of time.
- Watch the pocket depth: depths up to about three times the cutter diameter are economical; deeper gets slow and expensive.
- Avoid thin walls: below about 1 mm wall thickness aluminium vibrates during milling — at the expense of accuracy and surface finish.
- Allow for anodising: an anodised layer adds a few hundredths of a millimetre. Please mark fits that must be correct after anodising.
