Stainless steel turned parts to drawing
Shafts, bushings, pins and flanges in stainless steel — from prototype to series of 10,000 pieces, turned and milled in one setup.
Turned parts in stainless steel
Stainless steel is one of the most demanding materials on the lathe. Austenitic grades such as 1.4301 (304) and 1.4404 (316L) work-harden during machining, are tough and conduct heat poorly. Cutting them with the parameters used for mild steel leads to built-up edges, poor surfaces and short tool life.
We turn stainless steel every day: small parts in series from the bar feeder, chucked parts with robot loading, and complex parts with cross holes, slots and flats on our turn-mill centres — without re-clamping on a second machine.
Typical parts
- Shafts and axles
- Bushings and spacer sleeves
- Pins and bolts
- Flanges and covers
- Fittings and connectors
- Parts for food processing and packaging machines
Typical materials
| 1.4301 | X5CrNi18-10 (304) — the standard for most applications |
|---|---|
| 1.4305 | X8CrNiS18-9 (303) — the free-machining grade |
| 1.4404 / 1.4571 | 316L / 316Ti — for chlorides, food, pharma and marine environments |
| 1.4462 / 1.4410 | duplex and super duplex — high strength and corrosion resistance |
| 1.4021 / 1.4034 / 1.4542 | martensitic and precipitation-hardening — hardenable for wear parts |
Our machines for the job
| Hardinge Talent 8/52 | bar work up to Ø 52 mm with bar feeder, also unattended |
|---|---|
| 2 × Mazak Integrex 30 | turn-milling up to Ø 400 × 1,500 mm, bar up to Ø 64 mm |
| Hitachi Seiki CS 20 MC | chucked parts up to Ø 400 mm in series, robot loading |
Design tips
- Choose 1.4305 (303) where possible: it machines considerably faster than 1.4301 (304), which saves cycle time. However, it is less corrosion-resistant and only partly weldable.
- Tolerance only what the function needs: an H7 fit at the bearing seat makes sense; across the whole part it costs time. ISO 2768-m is usually enough for everything else.
- Allow inner radii and undercuts: sharp inside corners cause particularly high tool wear in stainless steel.
- Specify the material clearly: give the material number rather than just “stainless” — 1.4301 and 1.4404 differ markedly in price and application.
